ACTE Announces North Dakota Instructor as 2019 National Award Winner
ALEXANDRIA, VA—Today, the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) announced Katie Hatt, Medical Careers Instructor at the Grand Forks Public Schools/Grand Forks Area Career & Technology Center in Grand Forks, North Dakota, as the 2019 National ACTE New Teacher of the Year. This award recognizes new CTE teachers who have made significant contributions toward innovative and unique career and technical education programs and shown a professional commitment early in their careers. The New Teacher of the Year Award is sponsored by Goodheart-Willcox.
Katie Hatt teaches medical careers courses within the Grand Forks Public Schools and at Grand Forks Area Career & Technology Center (GFACTC). The GFACTC provides CTE courses to eight member school districts through various distance learning models. Hatt was hired to develop, from scratch, medical terminology and nurse assistant courses; she successfully developed and continues to deliver both courses with tremendous results.
In addition to the time and effort spent developing online courses, Hatt has established a weekly visitation schedule to conduct hands-on skill labs with her students in their home schools. Hatt has also been an advocate for her students in working with the State Board of Health to review testing accommodations for the growing population of English language learners within the region.
Hatt participated as an advisor for a team of HOSA students at the 2017 North Dakota HOSA State Conference, as she recognizes how CTSOs can provide additional learning and leadership skill development opportunities for students.
“As a proud sponsor of the ACTE Excellence Awards, Goodheart-Willcox is excited to honor the 2019 recipients and recognize their outstanding achievements,” said Todd Scheffers, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer for Goodheart-Willcox. “This partnership with ACTE reinforces our longstanding commitment to preparing students for success in college and the workplace. Thank you to all of the finalists for sharing your talents and leadership with students across the nation. Together, we build careers.”
Hatt was one of five finalists for the 2019 national title. The national winner was announced at the ACTE Awards Banquet, a dinner and award presentation recognizing the best CTE educators in the country. The event took place on Wednesday evening, November 28, during ACTE’s CareerTech VISION 2018 in San Antonio, Texas. The Awards Banquet was sponsored by Express Employment Professionals, the US Army, CareerSafe, Goodheart-Willcox, and Stratasys.
