ACTE Announces Kentucky Family and Consumer Science Teacher as National Award Finalist

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Today, the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) announced Rosemary Jones, Family and Consumer Science Teacher at Bell County High School in Pineville, Kentucky, as the recipient of the 2018 ACTE Region II Carl Perkins Community Service Award. This award recognizes individuals who have used CTE to make a significant impact on their community and demonstrated leadership in programs and activities that promote student involvement in community service.

Since 2006, Jones’s family and consumer sciences students have participated in as many as 17 volunteer projects. From Salvation Army book drives to safe driving campaigns, Jones and her students are committed to giving back. Their volunteer efforts at a women’s shelter in southeastern Kentucky include awareness events, craft projects, public service announcement, guest speakers and collecting health, beauty, and clothing items. The past three years, Jones’s students have devotedly raised funds for Pennies for Patients (a leukemia society) and collected canned food and jeans. Bell County High School worked and raised more funds than most large high schools in the state of Kentucky and were able to supplement the school’s food and clothing bank significantly.

Many of Jones’s students reside in an economically disadvantaged area. Accordingly, the service projects she plans involve items and skills students already possess, ensuring every student the ability to participate in the community service regardless of their backgrounds or socioeconomic situations.

Jones is one of 5 finalists for the 2019 national title. The national winner will be announced at the ACTE Awards Banquet, a dinner and award presentation recognizing the best CTE educators in the country. The event will take place on Wednesday evening, November 28, during ACTE’s CareerTech VISION 2018 in San Antonio, TX.
