CTE Announces Kentucky Family and Consumer Science Teacher as 2021 National Winner
ALEXANDRIA, VA—Today, the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) announced Tammy Camel, Family and Consumer Science Teacher at Rockcastle County High School in Mt. Vernon, Kentucky, as the recipient of the 2021 National ACTE Carl Perkins Community Service Award. This award recognizes individuals who have used CTE to make a significant impact on their community and demonstrated leadership in programs and activities that promote student involvement in community service.
Tammy Blackburn Camel graduated from Berea College in 2005 with a Bachelor of Art Degree in Child and Family Studies and a double concentration in Child Development and Family Studies. In 2010, Mrs. Camel graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a Master of Art in Teaching in Family and Consumer Sciences Education. Since 2011, she has been teaching Family and Consumer Sciences at Rockcastle County High School. She teaches courses in the Early Childhood Education and Consumer and Family Management career pathways. She offers a sequence of courses that are aligned to state and national standards where she offers industry-recognized credentials, work-based learning experiences, and opportunities for students to be involved in the intra-curricular student organization, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). Over the last nine years, she has had more than 16 Regional FCCLA officers and two Kentucky State FCCLA officers. Her students have competed in STAR Events at the regional, state and national level and received many gold awards.
Camel was one of five finalists for the 2021 national title. The national winner was announced at the ACTE Virtual Awards Gala, the first virtual awards presentation recognizing the best CTE educators in the country. The event took place on Thursday, December 3, during ACTE’s Virtual CareerTech VISION 2020. The Awards Gala was sponsored by Express Employment Professionals, CareerSafe, Goodheart-Willcox, eDynamic Learning and Stratasys.
