Full-time Positions

Fellowship Coordinator
ACTE is looking for an organized, personable, driven leader with strong communication skills to lead the Fellowship Program for the next two years. The Fellowship Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and implementing the ACTE National Leadership Fellowship Program, facilitates all Fellowship Program activities, maintains monthly contact with the Fellows, coordinates mentorship and personally provides mentorship to the Fellows, and pursues the option of college credit for the Program. The Fellowship Coordinator will also work with ACTE staff to set up meetings and conference calls for the Fellows, report to the ACTE Board of Directors on the status of the program, and attend the National Policy Seminar and the ACTE Annual Convention. The Fellowship Coordinator will be given a stipend in addition to coverage for all travel, hotel, and food and beverage associated with the coordinator attending ACTE events.

ACTE Internship Program

The ACTE internship program is an extension of the Association’s mission by furthering the career development of students in the greater Washington, D.C., area while providing critical support to staff activities.

Internships for postsecondary students in undergraduate or certificate programs are available on a for-credit basis during each semester of the academic year, or for the full term if both intern and staff to whom the intern reports mutually agree to the extension. Semester-based internships will be available in marketing, accounting, electronic media, graphic design, policy and management/administration.

Internships for students transitioning from secondary education to postsecondary/career education will be available June-August on an as-needed basis according to the needs of each department. These positions may include stipends.

Fall Semester 2010
ACTE offers for-credit internships during the fall and spring semesters of the academic year. Positions are available in accounting, e-media, graphic design, marketing, non-profit management and public policy. See the position descriptions for more information. Application can be made by e-mailing ACTE Internship Coordinator Jon Miller by April 16, 2010. Applicants selected for interviews will be contacted by April 23.

Summer Internships
Summer positions are available in the Programs and Communications Department. Summer interns will assist department staff with print and e-media, marketing and event planning support. These duties will rotate as needed by department staff.

Essential functions:

  1. Assist with research and contacts for print materials.
  2. Work with online editor to maintain style across electronic media.
  3. Support meetings and exhibits staff.
  4. Provide as-needed assistance to production of various electronic media.
  5. Research additional media outreach avenues.
  6. Contribute to Web 2.0 media, particularly blogs and forums.
  7. Assist marketing staff with electronic, print and other marketing, including promotional and informational e-mailings to membership.
  8. Other Programs and Communications duties as assigned and cleared by internship coordinator. May include assistance to Public Policy Department on a limited basis.

 Working relationships:

  • Internal: Staff in all ACTE departments, but primarily Programs and Communications.
  • External: ACTE state associations, Region and Division content contributors and officers, outside service contractors.

Experience, skills and qualifications:

  1. High school diploma and at least one completed year of postsecondary education in a related academic field; OR at least three years of secondary education with the intent to pursue a related postsecondary academic field.
  2. Familiarity with marketing, editing and research techniques.
  3. Familiarity with World Wide Web applications and utilities.
  4. Knowledge of issues pertaining to education, and career and technical education in particular, a plus.
  5. Ability to learn new tasks and concepts quickly and apply them to working tasks.
  6. Experience solving problems intuitively with limited supervision.
  7. Good people skills, capable of functioning alone or as a team member.

Compensation
The selected candidate will be awarded a weekly stipend dependent upon hours worked. Academic credit can be arranged through the candidate’s educational institution. If needed, the internship coordinator can assist with obtaining housing for the duration of the internship period.

Expectations from position
The selected candidate will serve under ACTE Programs and Communications staff for a period not less than eight (8) weeks from June through August, dependent on availability. In that time, the selected candidate will have furthered his or her editorial and research experience, learned to use ACTE’s content-management system, become proficient in the use and execution of Web 2.0 utilities, gained exposure to marketing techniques and meeting planning, and provided key administrative support at a contributory level. Ideally, in addition to these skills, the selected candidate will have gained additional exposure to educational issues and the more advanced skills necessary to effectively work in a diverse organization with targeted goals.

ACTE Scholar- and Practitioner-in-Residence

ACTE is implementing two new initiatives known as the Scholar-in-Residence and the Practitioner-in-Residence programs. The intent is to provide CTE professors and educators with scholarly/professional development opportunities while at the same time providing the ACTE membership as a whole with the outcome of the program. The specifics of each program are left to the discretion of the scholar/practitioner. The scholar might conduct research, write position papers, analyze public policy or conduct other such scholarly activities; the practitioner might initiate new activities and thrusts for career and technical education, work on membership development, provide feedback to ACTE staff, evaluate ACTE functions, help plan regional and national conferences, work on curriculum projects, support CTSO activities, participate in public policy activities, develop inservice workshops and conduct other such activities that have the potential to improve ACTE and/or career and technical education.

The scholar and practitioner will propose a plan of action, keeping in mind the mission and objectives of the Association. It is anticipated that the term of appointment will be 3-6 months, but this is negotiable. A substantial portion of time should be spent operating out of the ACTE Headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, but the scholar and practitioner are not required to spend the entire time at this location. The scholar and practitioner will receive a stipend of $1,000 a month. The beginning and end dates are flexible.

  • spend 3-6 months at ACTE Headquarters engaging in focused study that will enhance their own education, expand the knowledge base in career and technical education and provide leadership to ACTE
  • attend a variety of development opportunities that will enhance their scholarly expertise
  • become part of ACTE’s leadership team during their Headquarters stay

Practitioner-in-Residence
The ACTE Practitioner-in-Residence program provides opportunities for career and technical educators to further develop their competencies, skills and knowledge in CTE while making a contribution to the profession. The practitioner will be in residence at the ACTE Headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia. Through the program, practitioners:

  • develop a proposal for professional development and activity
  • spend 3-6 months at ACTE Headquarters engaging in a variety of activities that will enhance their own education, contribute to the advancement of ACTE and career and technical education and provide leadership to ACTE
  • attend a variety of development opportunities that will enhance their professional development
  • become part of ACTE’s leadership team during their Headquarters stay
